Wrestling Roundup: January 20-21

January 22, 2023 By Jordan Slocum

On Friday, White Pigeon joined 11 other schools in the Comstock Friday Night Invite wrestling event.   The Chiefs finished fourth with a 161 team score.   Two WP wrestlers came away with gold medals; Mazzy Lambert at 106 and Chaz Underwood at 285.

Taking second in their weight for the Chiefs were Hunter Pant (113), Caleb Lane (165), and Nate Irwin (190).  Seth Miller was fourth at 215 with Drew Johnson fourth at 120 and Evan Rudloff fourth at 150.

Moving to Saturday, Constantine competed in the Lakeshore Super Duals and went 3-1 for the day.   The Falcons got wins over Dowagiac (67-6), St. Joseph (57-21), and Hudsonville (45-24).  Constantine would lose by one (40-39) in a battle with the hosting Lancers.

Six Falcon grapplers went 4-0 in those matches; Bennett VandenBerg, Bear Geibe, Brody Jones, Carter Godfrey, Troy Demas, and Gregg Reed.

Colon competed in the Ron Russo Classic at Kalamazoo Central and finished 13th with 11 team points.   The deepest run for the Magi was Wyatt Downs, who won in the quarterfinal, but was defeated in the semi and the consolation semi.

There was also a separate girls bracket at the Ron Russo Classic which saw Three Rivers‘ Lily Ruesink place second at 130/135,   Constantine’s Shayla Nickoson went 2-2.

Sturgis‘s Lola Barkby competed in an all-girls event at West Ottawa Friday and took the top spot at 125/130 pounds, going 3-0 without allowing a single point.

The Trojans on Saturday went to Jenison in a five team tournament.   They went 0-4 with their tightest match a 39-36 defeat to Kenowa Hills.  The other matches were 57-24 against Zeeland East, 63-18 versus Jenison, and 84-0 against Hastings.

“We got a chance to wrestle some really tough schools today and one of them is ranked 10th at D2,” said coach Brad Barkby.  “It is good for us to feel what it is like to wrestle these kind of kids to get us ready for the end of the year push. We are young but we are getting better every time we step on the mat.”

Kaiden Waldron went 3-1 on the day.   Angel Alvarez, Aaron Castro, and Tristan Ainsworth each went 2-2.

Results from other events over the weekend were not reported.
