The 2023 MHSAA wrestling team district tournaments took place Wednesday and Thursday around the state. For St. Joseph County teams on Wednesday, White Pigeon and Mendon both came away with district titles. Then Thursday, Constantine secured a district crown.
In District #227 at Centreville, the hosting Bulldogs had the bye in the three-team bracket, awaiting the White Pigeon versus Marcellus winner in the final. The Chiefs bested the Wildcats 70-12, getting seven victories via void. Drew Johnson, Jesse Fielis, Evan Rudloff, and Caleb Lane scored pins for WP with Nate Irwin picking up a 15-3 win. Marcellus’s victories came from Kyle Drauch and Chase Karn; both by pin.
In the championship match, White Pigeon won 66-8 to claim the district title. Three victories were by void for the Chiefs. Getting pins were Landon Peterson, Nate Irwin, Chaz Underwood, Mazzy Lambert, Drew Johnson, Gavin McGrady, Jesse Fielis, and Evan Rudloff. The Bulldog wins were from Jamal Noble, Noah Brooks, and Owen Taylor.
White Pigeon moves to the regional hosted by Lawton on Wednesday. They face Decatur in the regional semifinal, with Martin and Lawton on the other side of teh bracket.
Elsewhere in Division 4, Mendon hosted and won District #223. The Hornets defeated Bellevue in their semifinal 60-3 with Comstock defeated Galesburg-Augusta 47-24 on the other side of the bracket. In the championship, the Hornets won 51-18. Individual results were not reported.
Mendon moves to Wednesday’s regional hosted by Homer and will face Bronson in the semifinal. The Vikings claimed District #224, sweeping Colon 78-0 in the semifinal and defeating Union City 39-30 for the title. The other side of the region has Homer and Springport.
In Division 2, Sturgis was eliminated in District #150 hosted by Edwardsburg. The Eddies downed the Trojans 72-12 in the semifinal, then topped Niles 54-30 in the championship. Getting pins for Sturgis in their match were Kaiden Waldron and Kyle Woodward.
Moving to Thursday and Division 3, Constantine won at Three Rivers in the District 192 final. The Falcons had the semifinal bye with TR pummeling Parchment 84-0 in the semifinal. In the championship, Constantine edged the Wildcats 32-28. Individual results were not reported.
Constatnine faces Hopkins in next week’s regional semifinal with the regional site still to be determined.
