For the first 47:52 of Friday’s week eight football game at Mendon, White Pigeon was without a single point. With eight seconds remaining, the Chiefs scored their lone touchdown on an Anthony Rubio four-yard touchdown run, followed by a two-point rush from Rubio to give White Pigeon an 8-6 win over the Hornets.
It was a defensive battle throughout between the longtime rivals, who both entered the game at 6-1 on the season. The first score, and Mendon’s lone score, came on a nine-yard Jackson Croster run midway through the third quarter. The PAT would fail, giving an opening to the Chiefs if they could get on the board.
Prior to their lone scoring drive, White Pigeon had only 101 offensive yards for the game, making their start from their own nine-yard line seem nigh impossible. But the Chiefs made their way slowly down the field, thrice converting on fourth downs.
The junior running back Rubio would cap off the drive with eight seconds to spare on a four-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 6-6. White Pigeon went back to Rubio for the two-point conversion and he cashed in, giving the Chiefs their first road win over their longtime foe in decades.
Mendon falls to 6-2 and closes the regular season at fellow 6-2 Centreville. White Pigeon improves to 7-1 and closes at home against Hartford (5-3). A playoff rematch between the Chiefs and Hornets could await, as they met in the 2018 pre-district with Mendon getting the better of another 8-6 result.
