Many Wolverine Conference volleyball teams made the trip to Portage Northern Saturday for tournament play including Sturgis and Three Rivers. For the Trojans, setter Harlie Blum reached the 1000 career assists mark in their second match of the day.
“She is a sophomore and is an amazing setter and even better teammate, however she could not have attained this success alone,” said head coach Tracy Sterling. “It is a pleasure coaching such a humble, hard working, goal driven setter. It is a pleasure to coach a team that was just as excited as Harlie to celebrate this moment.”
Sturgis earned a trip to the gold bracket after a 2-1 mark in pool play; defeating Paw Paw (25-9, 25-16) and Lakeshore (25-13, 25-21), but falling to Niles (25-18, 25-21). The Trojans won a tight quarterfinal against Bronson (16-25, 25-11, 15-8), but fell in the semi to eventual champion Unity Christian 25-9, 25-23. UC defeated Niles in the championship match.
Saturday’s result puts Sturgis at 14-4-2 overall on the season. Conference play resumes with Thursday’s trip to Otsego.
For Three Rivers, they went 3-3 for the day, taking silver bracket runner-up to Edwardsburg. Full scores and statistics were not reported. The Wildcats host Dowagiac on Thursday.
