Volleyball Roundup: September 16-17

On Saturday, Three Rivers and Sturgis both competed in the Portage Northern volleyball tournament and ended up meeting in bracket play.

In pool play, the Wildcats split with Bronson (25-20, 19-25) and Edwardsburg (18-25, 25-22) and lost to Okemos (16-25, 14-25).   The Trojans split with Otsego (20-25, 25-13) and Northview (17-25, 25-10) while falling to Lakeview (23-25, 18-25).

This sent both teams to the silver bracket where they met in the quarterfinal.  TR won the match in three, 25-20, 18-25, 15-11; ending Sturgis’ day.  The Wildcats beat another Wolverine Conference rival in the semi, topping Vicksburg 25-21, 25-15.  In the finale, Three Rivers fell against the hosting Huskies 25-16, 25-19.

Mendon competed Saturday at the Calvin Christian tournament and finished 3-1-1 for the day.   The Hornets in pool play defeated Covenant Christian (25-16, 25-16), and Wyoming (25-13, 25-18) while splitting with Potter’s House (24-26, 25-19).

In bracket play, Mendon topped Holland 25-10, 25-19; but then dropped the semifinal in a rematch with Covenant 25-23, 16-25, 15-11.

“We started out slow on the day and then really found our groove through pool play and into bracket play,” said Hornets coach Kenneth Herbert.  “I tell the team we use every opportunity as a stepping stone. We will use what we did today to continue to grow and improve.”

Glen Oaks over the weekend competed in Illinois at the Joilet tournament.  Both of their matches Friday with intense five set defeats.  Against Morton, GOCC fell 25-18, 25-23, 24-26, 21-25, 15-10.   Versus Highland, the result was 25-27, 25-19, 25-19, 17-25, 16-14.

On Saturday, the Vikings won a four set match against Bryant and Stratton 25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 25-16.  Glen Oaks then closed the weekend with a sweep of Frontier 25-18, 25-12, 25-18.

Now at 6-8 overall, the Vikings have their third league match coming up at Kellogg, which was rescheduled to Sunday, September 25 at 2 PM.
