Mendon and Centreville both competed Saturday at an invitational hosted by Division 4 second-ranked Athens.
In pool A, the Hornets took second with a 25-18, 25-20 win over Battle Creek Central and a loss to Athens 25-21, 25-15. The Bulldogs took the top spot in a pool B that featured Calhoun Christian and Camden-Frontier. Centreville’s full scores were unavailable.
In bracket play, Mendon topped Calhoun Christian 25-15, 25-12 and Centreville downed Pennfield, setting up another meeting of the league rivals in the semifinal. They were competitive yet again but this time, the Hornets were the winner over the Bulldogs 25-18, 12-52, 15-11.
Mendon met Athens again in the tournament final and were denied by the hosts 25-17, 25-12. Another rematch is expected in the District 115 semifinal which Athens would host November 3.
Before then, the Hornets have their home finale Monday against Three Rivers. Centreville heads to the Vicksburg tournament on Tuesday.

Elsewhere Saturday, Coldwater hosted the Interstate Eight versus Wolverine Conference showcase tournament. Three Rivers made it to the championship match, taking runner-up to Parma Western 25-16, 25-20.
The Wildcats advanced by winning the semifinal over Marshall 25-22, 25-23. In pool play, TR had three splits facing Parma Western (12-25, 25-19), Coldwater (25-19, 25-27), and Jackson Northwest (17-25, 25-10). Player statistics weren’t submitted and Sturgis’ scores from Saturday weren’t available.
