The 2019 high school volleyball postseason began Monday with a number of intriguing first round matches around the area. Below are the day one scores, along with broadcast replays from the Plainwell district and assorted scores and photos from Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Cass counties.
District 48 at Plainwell
Plainwell defeats Three Rivers 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 25-6, 16-14)
The nightcap at Plainwell was a wild affair as the Trojans and Wildcats went five sets for the second time this season. Plainwell erased a six-point hole in the first set to grab a narrow 25-23 win. Neither team led by more than three in the second set as Three Rivers came up victorious 25-22. The third set momentum stayed with the Wildcats for a lopsided 25-16 result.
The match shifted dramatically to Plainwell in the fourth, as the Trojans were untouchable for a 25-6 win to force the fifth. However, the match switched right back to Three Rivers as they quickly grew a six-point advantage in the fifth.
Plainwell would battle back, tying the match at 14-14 and getting their first lead of the final set on the next points, taking the win 16-14.
Unofficially, the Trojans had 15 kills from Vanessa Robinson, 12 by Alex Gabala, and nine via Alivia TerMeer. Three Rivers saw 16 kills by Kali Heivilin and 10 by Hadley Miller. Miller will graduate along with Karalyn Eldridge, Lizzie Bissett, Maddy Borst, and Kylee Nash.

Vicksburg defeats Comstock 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-21)
The Colts would give the Bulldogs trouble early in each set, as Comstock had initial four point leads in both the first and second sets. Roughly midway through, Vicksburg found their rhythm and pulled away. In the third, the Colts had their best start yet at 10-4. The Bulldogs erased that hole and didn’t trail again, although Comstock did briefly tie the final frame at 20-20.
Rylie Richter led the way for Vicksburg with 15 kills and five aces. Marley Ferguson added seven kills and three aces. Chloe Hatridge picked up six kills. Sammi Bogema topped Comstock with six kills.
