Big swings in the first half and a strong finish by host Sturgis underscored Friday’s 65-52 Trojans victory over Three Rivers in Wolverine Conference play.
Three Rivers led 21-13 at the end of the first quarter but Sturgis went on a 23-12 run in the second quarter to take a 36-33 halftime lead. The Trojans made it a five-point contest heading into the fourth quarter and kept adding to their advantage over the final eight minutes.
Freshman Thomas Kurowski was at the wheel offensively for Sturgis as the rookie scored a season-high 28 points. He and Sam Leck, who finished with 15, combined for nine points to start the fourth quarter while the defense held Three Rivers scoreless.
Brecken Stewart had 11 points for Sturgis, followed by Mark Diaz (four), Logan Wiard (three), Drew Murphy (two) and Dalton Smith (two).
Gavin Charvat led Three Rivers with 14 points and Tirrell Hausmanis finished with 12. Parker Ellifritz and Jalen Heivilin added nine apiece, Jensin Blyly scored four, and Nolan Mark and Brenden Brown both had two.
