Vicksburg volleyball grabbed a road sweep Thursday at Otsego (25-21, 25-22, 25-22), giving VHS their first Wolverine Conference team championship since 2014.
The Bulldogs split the title with Edwardsburg as both teams finished 8-1 in league duels. Vicksburg did defeat the Eddies when they played in a five-set thriller, but a loss to Plainwell kept VHS from an unblemished record.
Otsego started strong on their home floor, racing out to a 12-5 lead in the first set. By the next timeout, a 9-2 Vicksburg run had tied the match at 14-14. The set saw eight total lead changes and was locked up at 21-21. Back-to-back aces by Camille Wadley closed out the first for VHS.
Although competitive, Vicksburg never trailed in the second set. Otsego had it evened up at 16-16, but a 6-1 run from there allowed the red Bulldogs to hold off any late rallies.
The blue Bulldogs jumped out to a 12-8 advantage in the third, but Vicksburg battled back for the lead on the 19th point. VHS wouldn’t lead by more than two until the final point, a Hannah Vallier kill.
Unofficially, Vicksburg had 10 kills by Marley Ferguson and eight from Rylie Richter. Otsego’s Erikah Bower led all players with 13 kills.
Otsego moves to 21-19 overall and finishes fourth in the Wolverine Conference standings at 6-3, tied with Plainwell. Vicksburg goes to 22-14-4 and ties Edwardsburg for first place at 8-1.
Both pairs of Bulldogs return to action with tournament play Saturday from Coldwater. They could also meet again in the district championship if both are able to advance to that point.
