A trip to Gull Lake Wednesday resulted in a 7-1 loss for the Sturgis girls tennis team.
At No. 2 singles, junior Elle Bowman defeated Lillian Hamman 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) for the Trojans’ lone victory. Sturgis has a 1-1 overall record early this season.
“We had our first loss but had a great match,” coach Kendra Eicher said. “I am very proud of my team for their efforts tonight. We lost but we really played great tennis. We played hard, we came close in many cases to winning and we really showed our character tonight. We had so many close matches and great comebacks. … [Bowman] fought hard for her win and pushed through for our one victory.”
Lily Fell beat Khushi Vakharia 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, Maria Morrison topped Katie Flowers 6-0, 6-7 (2-7), 6-0 and Sarah Chang was the victor for the Blue Devils at fourth singles, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3, over Stephanie Schuler.
Gull Lake’s first doubles team of Susie Crum and Rachel Change knocked off the tandem of Stephanie Cressman and Gretchen Inman 6-3, 6-4, and Claire Freeland and Maddie Riegle beat Sturgis’ Allison Harker and Taylor Clark 6-2, 6-2 at second doubles.
Sarah Daniels and Jillian Riegle bested the Trojans’ third doubles pair of Madeline Earl and Elizabeth York 7-5, 6-3, and the No. 4 doubles team of Ashley Snow and Lauren Lewis fell 6-1, 6-3.
