Carlos Maldonado tied the game for the Sturgis boys soccer team with a pair of goals in a seven-minute span midway through the second half and the Trojans added three more for a 5-2 win at Gull Lake Tuesday.
Johnathan Gonzalez buried a shot on an assist from Gustavo Santana with 12:25 to play, followed by a gal by Junuhel Rubio (Enrique Lopez assist) four minutes later. Lopez finished the scoring spree with a successful penalty kick with 4:07 left on the clock.
Gull Lake’s Nick Knapper tallied both the Blue Devils’ goals early in the second half just over two minutes apart.
“This was a good test for the team,” Sturgis coach Luis Olivares said, “they were able to overcome the two goals differential by remaining focused and stayed with the game plan. The team learned that everything is possible when they play as a unit. We are looking forward to our next home game against Marshall on Thursday.”
Sturgis, which improved to 5-3-1 this season, had 19 shots on goal compared to Gull Lake’s seven.
