Trojans finish 5th in SMAC

November 3, 2013 By Wes Morgan

A 3-1 performance at the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference volleyball tournament Saturday netted Sturgis a fifth-place finish in the league.

The Trojans defeated Kalamazoo Central, Coldwater and Gull Lake and fell to Portage Central, 25-10, 25-16, in the tourney quarterfinals. Sturgis finished the regular season with a 30-16-4 record and an 8-3 mark in the SMAC.

Hollie Myers led the team with seven aces and produced 14 digs, 15 kills and seven blocks. Jamie Lioy had a team-high 23 digs and tallied 16 kills. Rachel Anderson swatted 34 kills, Kelsey Metzger totaled 70 assists and Nikki Nelson had eight blocks.

“Overall a very nice day for us,” Sturgis coach Von Metzger said. “We were the victims of an unfortunate draw that matched us up against Portage Central in the second round. It was nice to avenge our only two league losses to Coldwater and Gull Lake.  We are fairly healthy and ready for districts on Monday night. I thought the bench did a very nice job of keeping the energy level up and helping the girls on the floor play with more intensity.  Hopefully, this will continue as we move forward.”
