The Sturgis Trojans opened up their season Wednesday, shutting out the Loy Norrix Knights 14-0 in both games of a SMAC East doubleheader. The Trojans came out firing on all cylinders and were never challenged.
“Felt great to get out and finally play. Picked up two big wins,” senior Chance Stewart said.
Due to the winter conditions, the Trojans have spent a great deal of time during the early season in the gym practicing. They were ready to finally get out and compete for real.
“It was long overdue and it was freezing cold, but we finally got a game in,” assistant coach Derrick Gentile said.
In the first game, the Trojans mercyed the Knights with Kris Ransberger, who got plenty of run support, on the bump. In the first inning, the Trojans put up eight runs and continued to pile on in the fourth and fifth innings. Kalvyn Bowdish collected twi hits and one RBI. Chance Stewart posted two hits including a double and three RBIs. Also getting three RBIs were Tyler Cain and Jack Caywood. Vaughn Miller and Oakley Stevens each had an RBI. Getting a walk was Grant Little, and Tristen Stewart. Kris Ransberger threw 4.1 innings, only allowing one hit and recording eight strikeouts. Ransberger also got walked.
“I was impressed with the energy and focus we played with today,” head coach Matt Keim said. “We hit the ball well, and our pitchers did a great job of getting ahead in the count.”
In Game 2, the Trojans topped the knights 14-0 again. A huge sixth inning opened the game wide open, with Sturgis plating seven runs. Stewart earned the win after five innings, allowing two hits, and recording six strikeouts. Stewart also went 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Oakley Stevens picked up 3 hits including a double, and had 2 RBIs. Tyler Cain collected two hits and two RBIs, Kalvyn Bowdish got walked twice and stole four bases. Also recording a stolen base were Chance Stewart, Jack Caywood and Tyler Cain.
“Team played really well, and I’m glad they had fun,” Gentile said. The Trojans get back to action Thursday against the Kalamazoo Central Giants in a double header starting at 4pm.
