The Three Rivers girls cross country team split into underclassmen and upperclassmen squads Saturday at the Centreville Invitational and won both races.
Alyssa Speelman took the top spot in the 9-10th grade competition with a time of 22:59 and teammate Jamie Barrett was hot on her heels in second just seven seconds back. Rain Barnes finished fourth (23:27) and Carolyn Kirchner was seventh overall (24:32).
The upperclassmen faced only Sturgis in a close duel and edged the Trojans by four points. Marley Guy was second (22:39), Alicia Schmidtendorff placed third (23:05), Taela Sigman crossed the line fifth (25:27) and Kimberly Sibert finished sixth (28:18).
“Our girls all improved on their times from last week,” Three Rivers coach Josh Bell said. “I’d like to see them run tougher in the middle of the race and make more of an effort in the second mile. Overall we had a successful day because we won and also learned a bit about specific things we need to work on to become a better team.”
The Wildcats boys finished fourth in the Class B 9-10th-grade race, with Dylan Alexanderson the team’s top finisher in a time of 19:21, and fifth in the Class B 11-10th-grade race, with Alfredo Castro clocking in at 20:01.
