Three Rivers topped Niles 60-56 in overtime at Wednesday evening’s girls basketball district semifinal at Dowagiac. The Wildcat win sets up yet another collision with Edwardsburg in the district championship.
“Very proud of my girls for continuing to fight in the fourth,” said TR coach Jason Bingaman. “We were down eight in the fourth and battled back to force OT.”
The Vikings came looking for revenge, as Three Rivers had flattened them for a 69-39 final earlier in the season.
“Niles was a different team with having some players back healthy from the first time we played them,” noted Bingaman.
Kali Heivilin and Natalie Barnes each had 13 points leading TR.
“Heivilin was in foul trouble all night and fouled out down five with five min to play in the fourth,” added Bingaman. “When you lose a player like Kali with so much time left it could have been easy to fold but we didn’t. We needed to have some other girls step up with her in foul trouble and Barnes had a season-high scoring. (Gabby) Charvat and (Alivia) Knapp were able to pull down some big boards for us.”
Three Rivers improves to 12-2 and faces Edwardsburg in the district final at 6 p.m. Friday from Dowagiac. TR beat the Eddies 50-39 in their meeting this season and knocked them out in last year’s district finale.
