The Sturgis volleyball team swept its way through the South Bend Clay Invitational on Saturday with a 4-0 mark.
The Trojans, who improved to 15-9 on the season, defeated Jimtown (25-12, 25-19), South Bend Washington (21-25, 25-17, 15-4) and West Noble (25-13, 25-12), before defeating Rochester, 22-25, 26-24, 15-11.
Hollie Myers recorded seven aces, 31 digs, 19 kills and three blocks to pace Sturgis in the tournament. Kelsey Metzger came up with 70 assists, 11 blocks, 30 digs and five aces.
Trojans coach Von Metzger said he was proud of the way his team responded to a slow start in the finals to come away victorious.
“I think we learned a lot as a team today,” Metzger said. “We started with a 17-24 deficit in the second game of the finals, where one error could have ended it for us and we found a way to dig down deep and pull out the win.
“We are doing a much better job of hitting smart and our defense and serve-receive were for the most part fairly consistent. We still would like to cut down on the number of free balls and down balls that we give up, but we are getting better every day and we will work hard in practice this week.”
