Sturgis volleyball coach Von Metzger hopes to use Thursday’s home quad to hone the Trojans’ killer instinct heading into districts.
Against Class D’s top-ranked squad Battle Creek St. Philip, Sturgis lost a highly competitive match, 19-25, 27-29, 23-25. The Trojans put away Class C honorable mention New Buffalo, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21.
Hollie Myers led the team with three aces and 24 digs. Rachel Anderson finished with a team-high 37 kills and Kelsey Metzger notched 60 assists. Nikki Nelson came away with five blocks. Jamie Lioy ended the night with 22 digs and two aces, Anderson and Metzger also registered two aces, Dominique Beach posted 14 digs and Myers chipped in 19 kills.
“We wanted to use these matches as a tune-up for districts, and I thought they did a nice job of showing us where we are at as we get ready for the conference tournament also,” Von Metzger said. “I thought we played a very nice second and third game against St. Phil. We need to work on closing teams out when we can and not allowing teams to hang around.
“After that tough first match we had a letdown against New Buffalo and we had trouble getting our energy back up. Offensively, we weren’t as aggressive as I would like to see and it caused us to not play as well as we can. Fortunately, we were still able to persevere for the win against a very good New Buffalo team.”
