Sturgis, Three Rivers compete at regional tennis meets

Girls tennis regionals were held this week across Michigan with Sturgis and Three Rivers both competing on Thursday.   TR hosted Regional 18 and the Trojans went to Mattawan for Regional 9.

For Sturgis, their deepest run came from Hayley Miller in #4 singles.  Miller won her first, second and third round matches in straight sets, but fell to St. Joseph’s Lilly Shasky in the championship 6-2, 6-3.   The #2 doubles pair of Tina Tran and Tess Scheske made it to the semifinal with a first round bye and a second round win.  In the semi, they fell 6-1, 6-0 to eventual champs Katie Richards and Addison Devos of Byron Center.

#1 singles Rylee Carver fell 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) in the first round to Liz Vincent of Byron Center.  #2 singles Katie Strawser had a first round bye, then fell 6-0, 6-0 to regional champ Romika Shokobi of Mattawan.  #3 singles MacKenzie McMillin dropped the second round to runner-up Grace Yuan of St. Joseph.

#1 doubles pair Emily Schuller and Vivienne Merchant of Sturgis fell 6-0, 1-6, 6-2 in the first round to Mattawan’s Adelaide Douglass and Madison Engel.  #3 doubles pair Jessica Eash and Allison Herald had a first round defeat against Mattawan’s Sloane Lohroff and Nadia Baird.  #4 doubles team Ava Stewart and Madison Golden won their first round match 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, but dropped the second rounder to St. Joe’s Bethany Pavlov and Ellie Fischer.

Three Rivers saw semifinalists in two flights.  In #4 singles, Emily Workman had the first round bye and won the second round match, but fell 6-3, 6-2 in the semi to Harper Creek’s Lauren Willerick.   In #4 doubles, the Wildcat pair of Lily Zabonick and Maggie Gose had the bye and won in round two, but fell 6-1, 6-0 in the semi to eventual champs Gabi Davis and Dru Porter from Parma Western.

In #1 singles, TR’s Abigail Lemacks dropped round two 6-2, 6-3, to Niles’ Stella McDaniel.  #2 singles Kienna Shank was ousted in the first round 6-1, 6-3, to Pennfield’s Aubriana Farrow.   For #3 singles, Abigail Thompson snagged a first round win for the Wildcats but lost 6-2, 6-2 in the second to Maddie Miles of Parma Western.

#1 doubles Caleigh Barth and Layne Zabonick swept round one but lost round two to top seeded Maria Macchia and Kenzie Hiler of Parma Western 6-1, 6-2.   #2 doubles Taylor Workman and Arabella Mangold won their first round but defaulted in the second.  #3 pair Anna Ives and Brooklyn Page won round one in three sets but were swept in the second round by Edwardsburg’s Katie Schaible and Ella Castelucci
