Trojan tennis fought the wind Friday night as they challenged Zeeland East and Hamilton in a three-team matchup at Zeeland East High School. In the opening dual, Sturgis fell to Zeeland 7-1. Victorious for the Trojans was senior Lena Kues at #1 singles. After dropping the 1st set 4-6, she returned to win the 2nd set 6-1 and the super tiebreaker 3rd set 10-7.
Sturgis rallied to win the second dual of the night 5-3 against the Hawkeyes of Hamilton. Singles victories for Sturgis include #1 Lena Kues dropping only one game to win 8-1, #3 Lilly Rehm winning 6-4,6-3 and #4 Becca Barkley fighting hard in the 2nd set to pull out a 6-1, 7-6 victory. On the doubles side, the #1 team of Zoe Yoquelet/Jaylyn Kelley won 6-2, 7-6 and the #3 team of Audrey Harper/Emma Bowersox dropped the first set 4-6, while coming back 6-2, 10-7 to round out the win for the Trojans.
The Trojan tennis squad headed to Rockford on Saturday. Coach Andy Phillips’ team challenged Rockford, Grand Rapids Christian and Traverse City West in a Round Robin tournament where the Trojans finished in 3rd place for the day. Lilly Rehm topped her flight at #3 singles capturing 3 points for the Trojans. The #4 singles spot of Becca Barkley and the #5 doubles spot of Katie Strawser/Hayley Miller won 2 points each for Sturgis. Lena Kues also gained a point for Sturgis, rounding out the total to 8. This gave the Trojans a 3rd place finish behind Rockford with 22 points and Grand Rapids Christian with 17 points. Traverse City West nabbed 7 points for the day.
