Continuing its spectacular run through the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference slate, the Sturgis boys tennis team cruised to an 8-0 win over Marshall Monday at Augspurger courts.
The Trojans improved to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the SMAC, dropping only nine total games in the eight matches. Eric Bartley beat Cole Varvatos 6-2, 6-1, and Nick Rehm, Avery Paterson and Seth Miller all each collected 6-0, 6-0 wins.
The No. 1 doubles team of Chad VanDosen and Kris Ransberger finished 6-1, 6-0, and the No. 2 tandem of Nate Sisson and Andrew Airgood experienced little resistance in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Ben Sisson and Nick Foley at No. 3 and Caleb Northrop and Matt Polzin at No. 4 waltzed to 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-3 victories respectively.
“We played pretty well and got down to business quickly,” head coach George Earl said. “Marshall was young and played well, but we had more experience on our side.”
The Trojans travel to face rival Coldwater Wednesday.
“Today went well,” Bartley said. “We have been taking each match one at a time and giving that match our all. Each match poses a different and new challenge, and I would day as a team we have stood up strong to all of those challenges so far. I’m happy with how our team has done so far and I’m excited to see what unfolds on the court in the future.”
