The Sturgis tennis team was defeated 6-4 at Lakeview Thursday.
In singles, the Trojans’ Khushi Vakharia (No. 1) and Katie Flowers (No. 4) came away with victories. Vakharia, a junior, earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Autumn Babas, and Flowers, a senior, picked up a 4-6, 7-5 (10-4) win over Marin Nakashima.
“Tonight was a tough match. I am thrilled to see my No. 4 singles player, Katie Flowers, pull out a super tie breaker win for the third set against her opponent,” Sturgis coach Kendra Eicher said. “Katie fought hard and played up to the next level for a great victory. There were many close games and great point. Playing good schools improves our skills and shows us just what is inside. We never gave up and we gave it our best.”
Lakeview’s Anne Sangliana beat Elle Bowman 2-6, 6-4 (10-4) at second singles and Marino Segito knocked off Stephenie Schuler 6-4, 6-3 at fourth singles.
The Spartans swept Sturgis in doubles, with the team of Alisha Horan and Maddy Drikakis topping Stephanie Cressman and Gretchen Inman 6-3, 6-1, and the second doubles pairing of Kathleen Wendt and Julia Ryan taking down Allison Harker and Taylor Clark 6-3, 6-2.
Ami Kato and Maddie Schimpft beat Madeline Earl and Elizabeth York 6-3, 6-0, and Ellie Denison and Michelle Zhang recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Ashley Snow and Lauren Lewis.
