Sturgis’ girls tennis team opened the 2014 season Monday with a 7-1 win at Three Rivers.
Khushi Vakharia earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over the Wildcats’ Brenin Booko at No. 1 singles and Elle Bowman got a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Alexis Brown at second singles. Three Rivers got on the board after Taylor Katsoros topped Katie Flowers 7-5, 6-3 at third singles. Stephenie Schuler downed the Wildcats’ Emily Whitehead 6-3, 6-0 at fourth singles.
A nearly all-sophomore cast at doubles for the Trojans rolled to sweep.
Stephanie Cressman and Emily Condon defeated Emily Robers and Mikaela Ulmer 6-4, 7-5 at first doubles and the team of Allison Harker and Taylor Clark posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Daniella Stevens and Alysa Abnet.
Madeline Earl and junior Elizabeth York teamed up for a 6-2, 6-0 win against Daniela Springer and Meagan Trammell, while Ashley Snow and freshman Lauren Lewis turned in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lezlie Lull and Courtney Stevens.
“I am thrilled to have a 7-1 victory for our opening tennis match,” Sturgis coach Kendra Eicher said. “The weather held out for us but gave us a run for our money with the wind. “I welcomed back 10 varsity players and added Stephenie Schuler and Lauren Lewis, which are two great additions to our team. Our No. 1 singles, Khushi Vakarhia, led us well to our first victory. It was great seeing my No. 2 doubles team, Allison Harker and Taylor Clark, improve so much from last year and step up with a 6-1, 6-1 win. It was a great way to start our 2014 season.”
