The Sturgis girls swimming and diving team finished fifth out of six teams over the weekend at the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference East Division Championship at Battle Creek Lakeview.
Scoring 96 points, the Trojans placed ahead of Kalamazoo Loy Norrix (69) after recording top-six performances in four events. The team produced 14 personal-best times overall.
Lakeview won the meet with 499 points, followed by Harper Creek (319), Marshall (243) and Battle Creek Central (162).
Alea Penner was third in diving, Jessica Cline finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke, and the 200 freestyle relay of Penner, Kylie Trail, Sydney Strawser and Cline was sixth.
Cline qualified for the state meet in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM.
In the consolation finals, the 200 medley relay of Trail, Cline, Cleanna Crabill and Alea Penner placed seventh. In the same event, the quartet of Chelsea Cole, Sara Stemen, Elizabeth York and Amanda Camburn took 12th. Penner was 11th in the 50 free, Crabill earned claimed eighth in the 100 butterfly, York was 12th in the 100 butterfly, Trail posted a 10th-place effort in the 100 backstroke and the 400 free relay squad of Strawser, Crabill, Camburn and Anna Rueppel registered a ninth-place finish. Cole, Madeline Earl, Sara Trine and York were 11th in that race.
