Sturgis’ boys swimming and diving team had a strong showing at its own A&K Relays Tuesday, finishing second to Marshall.
The Redhawks soaked up 110 points, with the Trojans collecting 100. Battle Creek Harper Creek was third (62), followed by Kalamazoo Central (52) and Angola (Ind.) with 32.
Sturgis won three events, including the 400-yard medley relay (4:20.07) quartet of Daniel Tetzloff, Brandon Jones, Nathan Stemen and Grant Brown.
“It was a very close meet tonight and even though we did not win I was still really pleased with the way the boys did tonight,” Sturgis coach Andy Feyes said.
A staple of the A&K Relays, which have been contested for 33 years, is the under/over relay — an event the Trojans had never lost entering Tuesday. The Trojans again defended their title, with Brown, Jones, Tetzloff and Hunter Stanke clocking in at 1:51.86.
The team of Tetzloff, Jones, Stemen and Brown also won the 400 individual medley relay with a time of 4:20.07. In diving, the tandem of Dylan DeYoung and Kris Gibbs finished runner-up with a score of 366.10. Stanke, Trever Sprowls, Jones and David Polzin took second in the 200 breaststroke relay.
The Trojans will be back in the pool on Thursday night at 6 p.m. at home against Marshall.
