Sturgis’ volleyball team conquered a quad at Paw Paw Monday night with a 3-0 record. The Trojans edged Lakeshore 25-23, 25-23, escaped with a 25-23, 16-25, 15-9 win against Paw Paw and cruised past Comstock 25-15, 25-20.
“It was nice to come out with three wins tonight,” Sturgis head coach Von Metzger said. “I tried a number of different lineup combinations and it was good to see we were able to play well with the different lineups. We still need to work on improving our serve receive. We are giving up to many aces and allowing teams to score too many easy points.
Rachel Anderson did some damage at the service line for the Trojans, pounding seven aces and adding 32 kills and five blocks. Jamie Lioy and Morgan Pueschel finished with 16 and 17 digs, respectively. Lioy also had 16 kills. Kelsey Metzger dealt 49 assists and Hannah Marchand recorded 12 assists and five blocks.
“When we pass well we are a difficult team to match up against,” Metzger said. “Fortunately we still have a couple of practices to fine tune some things before the league tournament and districts. Starting tomorrow we should have a full team of healthy players for the first time all year. This will give us some much-needed depth as well.”
