Sturgis softball blasted host Loy Norrix 17-3 in the first game and then held on for a 5-2 victory in Game 2 Wednesday for a season-opening sweep in SMAC East action.
Dominique Beach blew away the Knights in Game 1, allowing just two hits and registering six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Paige Robinson collected four hits and batted in four runs to lead the Trojans offense, which also included a three-hit game for Beach and Melissa Maestas (double, four RBI).
Harmony Groves, Larissa Ludwick and Rachel Huff (two) also had hits for Sturgis. Groves got the final out for the save.
“I was happy with the first game performance, especially the freshmen and sophomores,” Sturgis head coach Matt Mizner said. “Dom pitched well with the conditions not being great.”
A tighter Game 2 went Sturgis’ way after Beach went the distance, giving up five hits and one earned run. She fanned nine batters to help seal the win. Groves had three hits and Robinson finished with two RBI. Ludwick had a pair of hits (one triple) as well for the Trojans, which led 3-1 after the third inning.
