The Sturgis girls soccer team’s trip to Battle Creek Central Wednesday yielded a 5-0 win to start the 2014 campaign.
Alea Penner and Marissa Parker scored two goals apiece and Jessica Cline finished with one for the Trojans. Penner, Parker (two), Kayla Thornton and Emy Reyes notched assists.
“I thought we played really well considering it was our first game,” Sturgis coach Todd Spahr said. “We made some mental mistakes in first half, got much better in the second. We have a very young team but our two seniors who returned from last year stepped up today and the underclassmen were able to get those first-game jitters out of the way.”
Junior keeper Kelsey Metzger shined in her first appearance at the position, doing her part to preserve the shutout.
“We had a great night,” she said. The team played really well especially for our first time playing as a team in a game. It was my first time as keeper tonight and my first time playing soccer. So, it’s interesting for me and a learning process. I have a very strong defense and I trust them a lot to keep the ball away from me, which is what we did tonight. The ball was hardly on our half of the field for more than 45 seconds.”
