Sturgis’ boys soccer team ran through Battle Creek Harper Creek like a soggy paper towel Thursday for a 7-1 victory. The Trojans concluded Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference East Division play with a 5-2 record and an 8-3-1 mark overall.
Battle Creek Lakeview, which defeated Sturgis 2-1 earlier this year, has a 4-2 mark in the East and will wrap up that portion of the schedule against Portage Central (3-1-1) on Sept. 26.
In the West, Portage Northern is on top with a 6-1 mark and 9-2-2 overall record, followed by Kalamazoo Central, which posted a 5-0-2 record in divisional action and sits at 8-4-2 overall.
Junuhel Rubio put the Trojans on the board in the third minute of the game off a Jose Soto assist. Jonathan Gonzalez punched in the next four — one assisted by Rubio and another from the aid of Alexander Castro. Omar Perez added to the drubbing with a score with 18:59 to play in the second half (assisted by Gonzalez) and Carlos Maldonado provided the final nail with 13:25 to play (also assisted by Gonzalez).
Isaac Montoya finished with six saves for Sturgis.
“My team wanted to end the last game of the conference strong by putting as many goals on the scoreboard,” Trojans coach Luis Olivares said. “I played four of our JV players and was very pleased with their performance.”
