JoeInsider.com caught up with a trio of Trojans after their 34-33 win on the road at Niles Friday to improve to 1-1 this season.
Kalvyn Bowdish
The senior receiver had six receptions for 116 yards and three touchdowns in his first game of the season.
“It felt great to get back out on the field and be able to play. I was looking forward to it all week. The team did a good job coming together on offense. We were able to establish some drives and move the ball down field. The line gave Chance [Stewart] time to throw and the receivers caught the ball. Gotta give credit to the receivers on the outside blocking on a few of those plays. Makes it pretty easy to score on a screen when you go untouched.
Matt Phillips
The senior running back/linebacker and co-captain rushed for 70 yards and a score on 14 carries, nearly doubling his output from the opener against Portage Central. He also registered six tackles.
“Defensively we got pushed around a lot last night. We had a lot of guys step up in the fourth quarter when we needed some stops. Our defense hasn’t really played much together, and it took some time for us to find our chemistry. We finally realized that we can trust each other to make plays that we are supposed to make. Guys started to stick to their assignment and buy in to what we wanted to do when we started playing our game, we shut Niles down on a few drives. We had a couple young kids that played pretty well.”
Chance Stewart
The senior quarterback and co-captain completed 55.6 percent of his passes (10 of 18) for 154 yards and three touchdowns.
“The guys just stuck with it, the game yesterday was a roller coaster. Everyone just hung in there and our defense came up huge in the fourth quarter.”
