The Sturgis golf team finished fifth at Wednesday’s SMAC East Jamboree, totaling 196 strokes. Battle Creek Lakeview won the event with a score of 156.
Marshall (168), Coldwater (176) and Harper Creek (195) also finished ahead of the Trojans. Lakeview’s Matt Alderink was medalist with 1-over-par 37.
Michael Freske led the Trojans with 45, followed by Marcus Neal (49), Ryan Brenneman (51), Anthony Matz (51) and Skyler Santori (58).
“I knew our scores would be high today due to lack of playing time, but I thought we’d shoot better than we did,” said Sturgis coach Bud Clark after the event at Binder Park Golf Course. “We’ve got three new players on varsity this year and we’ve got to get them up to speed quickly. We need the weather to improve soon so we can get outside on a regular basis. Michael led the way for us at 9-over-par, but he finished strong with a birdie on his last hole after almost holing his approach.”
