CENTREVILLE — The first round of the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference championship Wednesday at Island Hills went about as well as it could for the Sturgis High School varsity girls golf squad. All five Trojans carded career-best scores in the 18-hole event in scorching conditions. Their combined efforts totaled 408 strokes, which was good for fourth place.
St. Joseph went the lowest with a score of 354, followed by Battle Creek Lakeview (362) and Gull Lake (388).
Jessica Griffieon and Taylor Williams each shot a 95 (tie for 12th place), Taylor Clark finished with 103, Hannah Millard totaled 115 and Allison Herman ended the round with 135. It’s the best 18-hole team total by the Trojans since 2007.
“The girls were consistent today and playing on our home course definitely helped as many teams struggled on the greens,” Sturgis coach Ken Schau said. “We set goals at the beginning of the year regarding breaking personal records and 9- and 18-hole scores and we have reached a goal in every meet so far this year.”
Sturgis’ junior varsity team hosted a SMAC East Division scramble at Klinger Lake Country Club. Courtney O’Brien and Cameron Harper teamed up for a 55, which was good for third place. Harper Creek topped the leader board with 49.
