Finishing with a 2-2 record on the day, the Sturgis varsity volleyball team measured up pretty well against some solid squads from the surrounding area Saturday at the Lakeshore Round Robin Tournament.
The Trojans lost to a tough Mishawaka Marian team before rattling off two wins over Buchanan (25-16, 25-18) and Dowagiac (25-17, 25-9). Sturgis dropped a two-game match versus Lakeshore 25-11, 25-19.
“We saw some very good teams on Saturday,” coach Von Metzger said. “We are still working on our consistency and playing with max energy all the time. I thought we served fairly well, but we are still having trouble playing consistent hard-nosed defense. This includes our blocking and floor defense. I saw some glimpses of where we would like to be, but we did not sustain it enough to be good teams like Marian and Lakeshore.”
Rachel Anderson and Jamie Lioy led the team in kills with 24 and 16, respectively. Anderson also had a team-high 17 digs and five blocks. Kelsey Metzger finished with 59 assists.
