For the second weekend in a row the Sturgis volleyball team finished runner-up at a competitive tournament. Saturday it was a run to the Bronson Polish Classic finals for the Trojans, which lost 25-19, 20-25, 16-18 to Mason in the Gold Championship.
Sturgis beat Vicksburg 25-13, 25-21, Onsted 27-25, 25-15 and lost to Mason 21-25, 25-20, 10-15 in pool play. The Trojans knocked off Edwardsburg 25-21, 26-24 in the semifinals.
It was the second straight outing the program was without starting setter Kelsey Metzger, who suffered a concussion during the homecoming powder puff game.
“Unfortunately, we were not quite able to hold off a strong Mason team,” Sturgis coach Von Metzger said. “We are still looking for sustained consistent play. We are getting closer, but are not quite there yet. I thought Hannah [Marchand] did a nice job of running the offense with limited practice time. This experience will be extremely beneficial for her as we continue this year.”
Marchand collected 82 assists, four aces and 15 kills. Hollie Myers had 18 kills, 11 aces and 26 digs, Jamie Lioy posted 24 digs and 26 kills, Morgan Pueschel recorded 21 digs, Courtney Lovelace had 19 digs and Rachel Anderson registered eight blocks.
