Sturgis’ wrestling team logged a productive outing over break Saturday with a third-place finish at the Onsted Christmas Clash. Tecumseh won the event with 351 points, followed by Fruitport (296.5) and the Trojans (196).
Eight Sturgis grapplers placed at the tournament, with 160-pound sophomore Cole Campbell taking the top spot with a 5-0 record on the day.
After starting the season at 171 pounds, Campbell, who has a 9-1 record, says he’s in his element down a weight class.
“It felt a lot better,” he said. “My first kid I pinned him in 23 seconds and then majored my next kid 15-3. But my finals match was tough [vs. Tecumseh]. I beat the kid 10-9. I had the lead the whole match but at the end of the third he reversed me with 10 seconds left.
“And that is when we were at 10-9, but I knew just to keep from getting turned and I’d win.”
