Sturgis’ softball team beat Bronson 4-2 in the first game of a home doubleheader before falling to the Vikings 11-2 in Game 2.

Dominique Beach threw all seven innings in Game 1, allowing one earned run on six hits. She walked one batter and struck out 10.

Larissa Ludwick had two hits for the Trojans, with Melissa Maestas (double), Courtney Lovelace, Harmony Groves and Beach adding one hit each. Sturgis grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning and tacked on two more in the fifth.

Bronson got to Beach a bit early in the second game. She gave up three hits and one earned run, but defensive errors by the Trojans resulted in a 6-0 hole through the end of the third inning.

“We knew that Bronson was a very tough team and that we couldn’t make mistakes or else they would take full advantage of them,” Beach said. “… But I’m glad we started hitting the ball the last couple innings. The game is done and over with now, and we’ve learned from our mistakes. So now we’ll be ready for Saturday’s [home] tournament.”

The Vikings finished with 12 hits, while Sturgis mustered five. Lovelace, Beach, Ludwick, Paige Robinson and Megan Courtney each had one hit, with Ludwick and Beach collecting doubles.

“We had a fresh start in the first game; no one was getting down and mad at themselves,” Courtney said. “The second game, too many people got in their [own] heads. Just all around team mistakes, some of them basic things, but overall we gave up runs due to mental mistakes.

“We talked about getting out of our head and we are our own worst enemy. The only person who can fix the mistakes is us and move on to the next play.”
