Hitting its stride in the heart of the season, the Sturgis boys cross country team defeated Lakeshore 15-46 and St. Joseph 25-30 Wednesday on its home course. The Trojans’ girls team lost to Lakeshore 35-20 and were defeated 41-20 by St. Joseph.
Peyton Boughton edged Stevensville Lakeshore freshman Sydney Cason by 23 seconds to finish first in 20 minutes, 06.40 seconds.
“We had a solid run with both teams, and hit our pacing targets for the night,” Sturgis coach Emerson Green said. “We were working on pacing targets for this meet due to our workout schedule putting us on an extra hard week when we are off from SMAC competition. We have 17 of 18 boys up and running, but were missing a few girls due to illness and college visits. St. Joseph’s boys and girls teams were severely depleted by illness.”
St. Joseph took the top two spots in the boys race before Sturgis’ Shawn Bell crossed the line in third with a time of 17:36.10. The quartet of Grant Brown (17:46.80), Terry Stahl (18:08.90), Trever Sprowls (18:09.80) and Daniel Steele (18:42.10) followed.
Andrea Hernandez-Garcia was 13th overall in 24:05.60 and Sarah Hackman was 14th in 24:20.70 for the Trojans.
