A second-quarter offensive skid played a role in Sturgis’ 50-40 loss at Gull Lake Friday in a Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference boys basketball contest.
The Blue Devils (9-3, 6-1) built a 28-13 lead by halftime and held off the Trojans (6-5, 2-5) the rest of the way.
Senior Chance Stewart had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, junior Jack Scheske finished with nine points, four assists and two steals, sophomore Ryan Schuller added seven points, three rebounds and two blocks, and senior Lonnie Wright had four points and a steal.
Tristen Stewart posted two boards, two assists, a block and two steals, Jacob Cline chipped in a rebound, Andrew Airgood added two steals, a pair of assists and a board, and Matt Polzin pulled down a rebound.
Sturgis made 13 of 34 field goal attempts and went 2-of-6 from behind the arc and outrebounded Gull Lake 21-17.
The Blue Devils’ Joey Stap scored 16 points and Odell Miller followed with 10.
