Sturgis’ boys cross country team will compete for a Division 2 state championship after placing second at Saturday’s regional in Jackson. The Trojans scored 81 points to finish behind Chelsea (65) and ahead of Mason (88).
Grant Brown took seventh place overall in 16:36, followed by Shawn Bell (13th place, 16:46.3), Daniel Steele (16th,16:59) and Trever Sprowls (17th, 16:59). Terry Stahl was 28th as the team’s fifth scorer with a time of 17:19.
“The race was pretty similar to the last week [conference meet], Brown said. “Same first mile, same second mile and just a tad slower third mile. Our pace strategy was pretty much the same, so we were not trying to go out and try to do something crazy. The course wasn’t quite as nice as last week’s, but it is still a fast course for us to run. The team worked extremely well together. We ran very well together as a pack and worked to push each other through the race. It made it easier for all of us as a team to know that our teammates were putting in the work with us, doing it together. We have a tremendous amount of confidence. This was our highest finish as a team at regionals in the last three years, and we trust that our coaches will train us correctly so we will be at our best next week.”
David Polzin and Daniel Tetzloff finished strong in 52nd and 67th place, respectively.
Peyton Boughton claimed eighth in the girls race for the Trojans, finishing in 19:38 to advance to Michigan International Speedway next Saturday.
