Sturgis’ state-ranked boys and girls bowling teams rolled to victories Thursday over Battle Creek Pennfield in Coldwater.
The Trojans boys, ranked No. 7 in Division 2, picked up a 24-6 win, and the girls, tabbed the No. 8 squad statewide, lost to the No. 9 Panthers 21-9.
Sturgis’ boys set a new Southwest 8 Conference Baker record of 500 and improved to 4-1 for a three-way tie with Coldwater and Marshall in the league.
“[We] bounced back tonight from a tough loss Tuesday with a solid singles performance and an outstanding Baker performance,” Trojans coach Scott Spahr said. “The previous conference series record for Boys Baker was 497 held by Coldwater.”
Though the Trojans had a solid outing on the girls side, they fell to 4-1 in the league for a first-place tie with Coldwater.
“[Pennfield was] looking to avenge a season-opening loss to the Trojan squad,” Spahr said. [Sturgis] bowled their best overall performance of the season and pushed the Panthers to the verge of another roll off and possible loss. Both teams continue to gel and improve as the season progresses. The boys are in search of defending their 2013 state title whereas the girls are pushing to make the state finals this year in only their third year and second year with a full-time coach.”
