Sturgis traveled to Sterling Heights over the weekend for the Heartbreaker Baker Tournament.
“A fun day on the lanes for our varsity bowlers,” said Trojans coach Scott Spahr. “Competing against some of the best bowlers in the state in a modified baker format. Two boys and two girls on each team establishing a rotation for each three game set of the four and repeating every four frames through the 30 frame set.”
Sturgis’s A team of Lydia Boland, Kortnie Matz, Brayden Smoker, and Andrew Matz made it into the 16-team bracket with a 2323 score in the qualifying. The Trojan B team (Donna Henson-Bohlen, Kami Kimes, Garrett Liston, Caleb Henson-Bohlen) had a 2073 and the C team (Morgan Baumeister, Jaden Moore, Lane Malone, Josh Groff, Owen Brewer) scored 1652.
In bracket play, Sturgis’s A team was the #8 seed, but were defeated by #9 seed Utica 205-195, 174-151. Dakota ended up being the event champion.
“It was a day of building confidence in themselves as we head to regionals,” said Spahr. “Plus, letting the athletes learn about putting a rotation together. We, as coaches, after establishing the squads, let them make their decisions and implement them. Just giving some bowling instruction as needed/requested.”
“That confidence they displayed is going to go a long way in the next couple of weeks and beyond the season, in more than just bowling.” Spahr added. “It was a good day.”
Up next for Sturgis bowling is the Wolverine Conference championship Friday morning.
