Sturgis’ boys and girls bowling teams claimed victories against Coldwater Wednesday at Battle Creek’s M-66 Bowl.
The boys won 18-12 to improve to 5-1 in the Southwest 8 Conference and remain tied for first place with Jonesville. The girls ran away with a 24-6 victory for a 5-1 league mark and sole possession of first place.
“The guys reached down deep and pulled out a tough win on a night when they struggled,” Trojans coach Brandon Smith said. “Needing a strike to finish the second singles game by enough pins to win total, Marcus Neal delivered. Then in the second baker game they caught a break when Coldwater’s Buddy Bailey couldn’t get a 4-pin to fall, this allowing Ramsey Cline to double and stop the Cardinals bid to force a tiebreaker.
“My girls continue to round into shape for the postseason, handling their business as they should, especially on a night when the Lady Cardinals were without their senior leader, Dana Bailey. I like the way we are gelling as a team. There is always someone there to pick up the team and their teammates when it is needed. I am seeing some great leadership out of my seniors and watching it rub off on my other ladies.”
Both teams compete Friday against Battle Creek Lakeview at L&J lanes in Jonesville. The Trojans also roll Sunday in Battle Creek at the league singles tournament.
