Sturgis hammered the ball Thursday in a 19-4 win over Dowagiac before losing the second game of the Wolverine Conference softball doubleheader, 4-3.
Carrigan Carpenter was the winning pitcher for the Trojans in Game 1 after scattering five hits and giving up three earned runs. She struck out seven and walked eight.
Sturgis held a 9-3 lead through three innings and extended the advantage to 12-3 through six. The Trojans plated seven runs in the seventh and finished the game with 15 total hits.
Carpenter singled three times and drove in three runs, and Brooke Bodi (one double), Baleigh Brazo, Madison Pueschel and Shelby Bennett all had two hits. Baleigh Knapp (double), Morgan Miller, Carlie Watson and Kiley Weiderman also had hits. Brazo registered 3 RBI, Bodi, Miller and Watson all had two, and Knapp, Pueschel, Bennett and Weiderman pushed in a run apiece.
“Huge win for our program,” Sturgis coach Greg Brooks said. “If we continue to hit the ball like we did in the first game, we can play with most teams in our conference.”
Dowagiac started Game 2 with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and one more in the second. Sturgis chipped away with a run apiece in the third, sixth and seventh innings to come up just short.
Weiderman took the loss after only giving up five hits and one earned run. She struck out 12 batters and only walked two.
Bodi (one triple) and Pueschel recorded two hits each for the Trojans. Both drove in a run. Carpenter and Weiderman added singles.
