Battle Creek St. Philip fought off a Colon comeback for a 57-55 victory to remain undefeated.
The Magi kept pace with the Fighting Tigers until being outscored 14-7 in the third quarter to start the final eight minutes on the wrong end of a 49-40 deficit. Brad Brittingham scored seven of his game-high 27 points in the final stanza, but that wasn’t enough for Colon, which fell to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the Southern Central Athletic Conference.
St. Philip, ranked No. 6 in Class D, regained a two-point advantage with 10 seconds to play after knocking down the front end of a one-and-one. Colon couldn’t convert on the potential game-tying shot.
The Fighting Tigers improved to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the SCAA.
Spencer Smolarz scored seven points, Tyler Schipper had four, Logan Vaughn posted five points, Mike Flick notched four, and Brandon Hinkley, Billy Vaughn, Bailey Tyler and Brett Prell each finished with two for Colon.
Brittingham tacked on 11 rebounds and three steals, Smolarz led the team with three assists on top of six boards and Hinkley grabbed five rebounds.
