Kalamazoo Central hosted Loy Norrix and Kalamazoo Christian Saturday in the first softball edition of the Kalamazoo City Championship. The teams played a round robin with the Maroon Giants taking the title.
A five-run first inning gave KC the lead from the start. Stefanie Nizzardini scored three runs on three hits with two RBI for the Maroon Giants. LN’s Gracie Goschke had three hits, two RBI, and a run.
The Knights bounced back in the second game with six of their eight hits being doubles. Goschke had two of the doubles for three RBI and a run.
The final game was a pitcher’s duel that saw a one-hit complete game shutout from Central’s Kearney Miller, who struck out nine with zero walks. Miller and Nizzardini each had two hits and a run. Comet pitcher Aubrey Herder allowed two runs and six hits in a solid start.
The victories put Kalamazoo Central at 10-14 on the season with a trip to SMAC foe Lakeview ahead on Thursday. Loy Norrix (2-13) hosts Bridgman Monday. Kalamazoo Christian (9-12) hosts Watervliet Monday.
