Schoolcraft softball’s season ended in a heartbreaking fashion in Saturday’s regional tournament at Centreville. After defeating Delton Kellogg 7-3 in the semifinal game, the Eagles dropped a 2-1 nine-inning championship affair to Buchanan.
The pitcher’s duel championship was scoreless through six innings with Schoolcraft’s Cassidy Bruner throwing a no-hitter to that point. In the top of the seventh, Lauren Evans had a lead-off single for the Eagles and eventually scored due to an error. But Brooke Atkinson was able to get the first Bucks hit to lead off the bottom of the seventh and ultimately force extras.
In the bottom of the ninth, Atkinson singled again for Buchanan and was sacrificed to second. Sophia Lozmack then delivered a walk-off double to secure the regional crown for the Bucks.
Bruner’s final line for the Eagles was 8.1 innings, four hits, two earned runs, two strikeouts, and one walk. For Buchanan, Lozmack tossed nine innings with four hits, no walks, one unearned run, and 12 strikeouts.
Schoolcraft finishes at 25-7. The Bucks improve to 34-4 and play in Tuesday’s Division 3 quarterfinal at Cornerstone University. Buchanan won the earlier semifinal 5-2 against Watervliet.
In the 7-3 semifinal against Delton Kellogg, the Eagles had a big five-run second inning and two runs in the fourth inning, whereas the Panthers had single runs in the first, second, and sixth innings.
Schoolcraft’s Liv Pavlak was the winning pitcher with nine hits, three earned runs and one walk allowed with six strikeouts over the complete game. DK’s Abby Fichtner surrendered 13 hits, seven earned runs and five walks with three strikeouts.
The Eagles had doubles from Kelby Goldschmeding, Jordan Watts, and Lauren Evans. Goldschmeding, Evans, Sophie Ridge, and Alayna Meade each had two hits.
The Panthers had a solo home run by Fichtner, plus two doubles and two RBI by Allie Trantham. With the defeat, Delton Kellogg finishes with a 20-11 record.
