Local boys varsity golf teams from St. Joseph, Cass and Kalamazoo Counties competed in Michigan High School Athletic Association regional tournaments Wednesday and Thursday, with the top three squads and top three individuals not on a qualifying team at each site moving to the state finals.
At Olde Mill
With a 355, Schoolcraft won a regional title after fending off Dowagiac (363) and Delton-Kellogg (367). All three teams advance to the state finals. The top individual state qualifier was Brendon Patmalnieks of Constantine. The senior fired a medalist round of 77.
Parker Lawrence led Schoolcraft in third place with a 79, Max Desmond was sixth with an 85, Myalz Berkheiser had a 95, Bret DenHarder shot a 96 and Collin Blalock scored a 98. Drew Phillips paced Dowagiac in fourth place with an 84. Matt Mosier (89), Drew Davis (90), Jared Stillwell (100) and Dylan Elmore (114) rounded out the scoring for the Chieftains.
Constantine was fourth overall with a 372, Parchment was seventh (389) and Comstock finished 15th(538).
At The Meadows
Rockford’s score of 294 was the best of the day and Caledonia (307) and Hudsonville (313) snagged the other state qualifying spots. Individually, Portage Central’s Will Anderson moved on to the state finals after firing a 72, which was a tie for the second-best round of the day. Caledonia’s Cam Poll shot a 68 for medalist honors. Portage Central was sixth overall with a 320, Portage Northern finished seventh with 329 and Kalamazoo Central was 15thwith 399. Loy Norrix did not have enough players to register a team score.
At Four Lakes
Marshall claimed a regional crown with a 308, But Gull Lake (312) and Edwardsburg (313) punched their state finals tickets. Finishing fourth overall was Gull Lake’s Ben Pejka, who fired a 74. Teammates Zach Pejka (84), Mitchell Geik (79), Andrew Curtis (83) and Bryce Wheeler (75) rounded out the team’s runner-up performance. Edwardsburg’s Satchel Pierce was second individually with a 74. Brayden Bell and Garon Carrubba both shot 79 for the Eddies, David Kanczuzewski had an 81 and Cody Closson ended the round with an 84. Sturgis finishd 12thoverall with a 395, Three Rivers was 14thwith 416 and Vicksburg did not have enough players to register a team score.
At Milham Park
Hackett dominated the tournament with a 308, beating out fellow state qualifiers Kalamazoo Christian (353) and St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic (368).
Ryan Chafty was medalist for the Irish after shooting a 74, followed by Will Verduzco and Tommy Keyte, who tied for second with 76. Aidan Gillig (82) and Ben Bridenstine (84) also cracked the top 10 with seventh- and eighth-place performances, respectively. For Kalamazoo Christian, Benjamin Cramer shot 85, Kylin Geresy and Elijah DeVries both finished with 88, Kyle Nash carded a 92 and Joshua Bouma finished with a score of 93.
White Pigeon’s Blaine Shafer qualified individually with a 78 and Centreville’s Carter Geigley moved on with a 79.
Centreville just missed out on qualifying as a team after finishing fourth with a 372. Marcellus Howardsville Christian was sixth (398), and Marcellus placed eighth (418). Burr Oak, White Pigeon and Climax-Scotts did not register team scores.
