Big things are still in store for Three Rivers’ Teagan Reeves despite not being named Miss Basketball. That honor went to Crystal Falls Forest Park’s Lexi Gussert, who became just the second Upper Peninsula product to be named the state’s top senior.

Gussert, a Michigan State University signee, received 1,938 points from the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. Midland’s Jessica Walter had 1,180 and Reeves finished with 791. On the court this season, which continues tonight for Forest Park in a Class D state semifinal game against Athens, Gussert has registered 2,593 points (29.4 per game). Her 101 3-point baskets set a state record earlier this week

Reeves, who signed to play volleyball and basketball at Western Michigan next year, scored 557 points (23.2 per game) and grabbed 322 rebounds. She also notched 54 assists, 117 blocks (4.9 per game) and 50 steals.

That well-rounded production wasn’t enough in voters’ eyes.

“I was upset, but for Miss Basketball all the voting is completely out of your hands,” said Reeves, who led the Wildcats to the Class B regional semifinals this year. “There’s nothing that you can do once your season is over to try to make people vote for you more. I wasn’t regretting anything. I did everything that I could do.”

With a softball season still to play before transitioning to college athletics, Reeves looks back fondly at her four years of hoops.

“My dad cut out every single article and put it in a big book for me,” she said. “That’s exciting, but I don’t think of that stuff very often. I think about how insane it was to run out in front of all our fans in our gym at Three Rivers, having all those people travel to games and all the community support I got through my four years. That’s the kind of stuff I think of more than the stat stuff — and all the time I got to spend with my team.

“Before games I would usually go up and talk to people in the stands and ask them how they’re doing — just people that have been supporting us for four years. They always say, ‘I’m so excited to come watch you play at Western.’ It’s such a good feeling. It would be really weird if I was going really far away and I knew that all of this was going to be done. It’s a lot easier finishing my high school season because I know I’m still going to see a lot of familiar faces when I’m at Western.”
