Three Rivers’ wrestling team hosted Saturday’s Wolverine Conference Championship, but the day belonged once again to perennial power Allegan, which won eight individual weight classes for 264 points.
The Wildcats were second with 162 points, followed by Edwardsburg (123), Vicksburg (123), Berrien Springs (84.50) and South Haven (82.50).
Allegan went 11-0 in league duals this year to earn the maximum 12 points. With the tournament crown’s 12 points, the Tigers won the league outright with 24. Three Rivers finished 9-2 in conference duals for 10 points and earned 11 Saturday for a total of 21. Edwardsburg finished tied with Three Rivers in the final standings after going 10-1 in league duals and a third-place performance Saturday.
Three Rivers’ Dallas Recker entered the tournament with a double bye at heavyweight and pinned Vicksburg’s Mo Quesade in 1:46 before claiming the Wildcats’ only individual title with a fall against Dowagiac’s Tristan Howard (1:09).
A trio of Wildcats wrestlers finished runner-up, starting with Javier Sandoval’s run to the 135-pound finals. That’s where he ran into Allegan’s P.J. Cole, who registered a pin in 5:20.
Connor McElroy picked up two pins at 140 to make it to the finals, where he lost by fall to Plainwell’s Cam Owens in 1:40. At 160 pounds, Shawn Brew, who is ranked No. 9 in Division 2 by MichiganGrappler.com, faced two fellow ranked wrestlers in his bracket. Brew won by major decision in his first match versus South Haven, pinned Berrien Springs’ Jacob Peasley, an honorable mention in Division 3 and lost to Allegan’s Chase Beard by technical fall in the finals. Beard is tabbed the No. 4 grappler in Division 3 at 152 pounds.
“We had kids step up and win matches they had lost earlier in the year,” Three Rivers coach Pete Bachinski said. “Eight place winners and kids just winning matches today contributed to taking second as a team.”
