Three Rivers didn’t miss a beat Thursday without senior captain Shawn Brew, who underwent an MRI on his knee instead of wrestling with his teammates in a double dual at Vicksburg.
Without Brew, a state-ranked 160-pounder who will miss the next couple weeks and undergo surgery at the end of the season to repair a torn meniscus, the Wildcats thoroughly beat Plainwell (66-18) and Berrien Springs (64-16) for a pair of Wolverine Conference victories.
Coach Pete Bachinski said it’s a testament to the platoon of talented wrestlers behind the starters that his program has developed.
“Having a captain and a leader gone is always tough,” he said. “But this team has depth. The other kids can step up and pick up that void. Dallas Todd is the backup and a junior and does a good job.”
Todd split Thursday, pinning Plainwell’s Jake Brinkman in the first period and getting stuck late in his match against Berrien Springs’ Jacob Peasley.
The greedy Wildcats, which improved to 14-7 overall and 5-0 in the Wolverine, went for every available point, something Bachinski was happy to see at this stage of the campaign.
“We’re falling right in track at the right time of the season,” he said. “Getting pins where we need them and wrestling six minutes in a lot of matches.”
