A good crowd and a gritty performance wasn’t enough for the Burr Oak volleyball team Thursday as Southern Central Athletic Association opponent North Adams-Jerome came to town and took both matches of a doubleheader.
In the first match, the Bobcats were defeated 25-18, 23-25 and 25-13. North Adams-Jerome claimed a 25-15, 25-19 victory in the second.
Head coach Kris Owens’ team gave up a six-point lead in the second set of the first match but stayed calm when it was tied up at 22-22. Jade Summey gave the Bobcats a little breathing room at 24-22 after slipping the ball over the net and out of reach of the Rams. Burr Oak (10-6) lost its momentum early in the third set, when the Rams went on a four-point run for a 7-2 advantage and never looked back.
“Double loss against a team with an amazing defense and my offense was not strong enough at the net tonight to make key plays,” Owens said. “Their serve receptions were turned into three-touch offensive plays about 99 percent of the time, while we had some bad reception passes that landed in their hands resulting in kills — not a good scenario for us.
Brooke Cooper scored 20 points and finished with an ace, 13 assists and four digs. Michaela Ultz produced six kills, two blocks and two digs, Sydney Owens had 20 points, three kills, to block assists and nine digs and Jade Lown added nine digs and six points.
Madi Adams came away with four points and a pair of digs, Chelsey Boyd scored 12 points, registered two kills and 21 digs and Jade Summey posted nine points, seven kills, two blocks and seven digs. Tori Everitt chipped in four points, a kill and a dig, and Kyhann Currier contributed five points, an ace and a dig.
